A 150 Years of Island Music is a lively celebration of Island folk
music, folklore, and storytelling that will commemorate the 150th
anniversary of Prince Edward Island joining the Confederation of Canada.
You won’t want to miss this wealth of poetic storytelling, songs and
dance of our distinctive Island culture performed through lively music
and tradition.
The Irish Scots are a combination of performers from Irish and Scottish
ancestry, who together play a mixture of Celtic, original, traditional,
country, folk and soft rock tunes that will have your toes tapping
throughout the shows. The Irish Scots include Norman Stewart, Maxine
MacLennan, and Courtney Hogan-Chandler. Along with lively vocals,
audiences will be treated to tunes on guitar, fiddle, bodhran and
mandolin. You are guaranteed to laugh at the humor and stories, and you
will find yourself singing along with every word!
PEI storyteller, Alan Buchanan, will narrate the show to illustrate
significant events, eras, and customs of our unique Island communities,
and honoring the value and persistence of the oral tradition during this
sesquicentennial year of celebration. Allan is well-known from years of
the award-winning Hedgerow group, and more recently, the popular The
Four Tellers, which played four seasons to sold-out houses across the
province. Alan's stories and narration give context to the show,
highlighting the various themes and events that influenced Island song
writing through the decades. World champion dancers, Janelle Banks, and
Molly MacEwen, complete the performing troupe, and they’ll kick up their
heels with a variety of folkloric steps that you won’t want to miss!
“We try to showcase all the great musical contributors of the past 150
years of amazing Island music, covering material from Larry Gorman to
Stompin’ Tom Connors to Gene MacLellan to Lennie Gallant, and everyone
else in between.” says Maxine MacLennan, Singer/Songwriter, The Irish
Scots
